You can get a base ring and upgrade it to a better ring by gaining faction with The Violet Eye. Each time you reach a new level of reputation, you can get your ring upgraded. There are four possible ring choices and upgrade paths: Path of the Violet Mage, Restorer, Assassin, and Protector.
This is similar to the Brood of Nozdormu ring upgrade quests.
